General

1 - Is it possible to install Micromedia applications on a virtual machine?

Yes, Micromedia International applications can be installed on virtual machines. But beware, this type of architecture imposes restrictions on communications equipment. In a virtual machine environment, the physical USB and RS-232 ports can be assigned to specific virtual machines. If you can not do this operation, the use of equipment assigned to Micromedia applications will have to be done through an IP network. You must then use a USB/IP or RS-232/IP converter.

For the sending of vocal alarms, we recommend using VoIP. This allows users to make vocal alarm over the IP network. If the infrastructure is not compatible with VoIP, a modem is necessary. RS-232/IP or USB/IP converter can be used to access your modem through your IP network.

2 - Is it better to use Prog'Time or Jericho to control industrial facilities without being present on site?

Your needs will dictate your choice. Prog'Time is a scheduling server. From a scheduling table, Prog'Time will command your facilities (through a supervision application). Jericho on the other hand can make these commands only when the order is transmitted by telephone. Moreover Jericho incorporates a set of functions (such as speech synthesis, dissemination of messages, etc...) which Prog'Time doesn't.

3 - What software is best suited for broadcasting messages, Alert, Jericho or Siren?

The use of these three programs is very different. Alert is a message broadcast software but also manages the problem of on-duty schedules. Through its on-call schedule, Alert will choose the operator who will be called, on several numbers in case of failure. Jericho and Siren do not support on-call schedules. For Siren, an operator will manually select the group to call. Siren has been developed to launch a large number of messages in a short time. If a person does not answer a call, Siren mentions it in a transition report and continues to send messages to the group. For Jericho, those calls are triggered by an external application via its API. It is sold under OEM license.

Alert will contact one person, and contact this person in priority before moving on to another operator. The choice between these 3 software depends on the use required by your installation. To manually trigger a large number of messages in a short time, prefer Siren. For a complete management of on-call operators schedules, prefer Alert. To integrate a communication layer in your application, prefer Jericho.

4 - Contextual help does not appear

Symptom: When you click on "?" to display contextual help, an error message appears.

Cause: Microsoft stopped including the 32-bit Help file viewer in Windows releases beginning with Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.

Resolution: Install WinHelp32.exe from Microsoft Support.
